When to Replace Your Seat Foam (And When You Might Not Need To)

If your couch or chair no longer feels as supportive or comfortable as it once did, you might be wondering: Do I need new foam? The answer isn’t always straightforward—but at Elegance Upholstery, we’re here to help you figure it out.

Foam cushions can wear out over time, especially in areas that see heavy, repeated use. But in many cases, they just need a little attention—not a full replacement.

Common Signs Your Foam Needs Attention

You might need to replace your foam if you notice:

  • Loss of support: If you sit in the same spot every day and it feels significantly softer or you "bottom out," the foam’s internal structure may have started to degrade.

  • Permanent sagging or flattening: If your cushion doesn’t spring back after pressure is removed, that’s a red flag.

  • Crumbling, cracking, or breaking apart: This usually indicates the foam has aged past the point of recovery.

  • Musty smell or visible stains: Moisture and mildew can permanently damage foam.

Before You Replace: Try a Restoration First

Not all tired-looking cushions need new foam. Sometimes, they just need to be steamed and rewrapped.

At Elegance Upholstery, we often begin with this simple, cost-effective approach:

  • Steam the foam to help it expand and regain its shape

  • Replace the terylene wrap (also known as polyester cushion wrap) to restore loft and comfort

This can significantly improve how a cushion looks and feels—especially if the foam itself is still in good condition. It’s a great first step before committing to full replacement, and many of our customers are surprised by the results.

Before-and-after comparison of a beige sofa: the left side shows sagging, creased cushions with a white throw, labeled “✘ BEFORE”; the right side displays firm, well-shaped cushions and a refreshed appearance, labeled “✔ AFTER,” separated by a diagonal orange line.
A simple foam replacement can transform tired, sagging cushions into firm, supportive seating—just like new.

When Foam Replacement Is the Best Option

That said, steaming and wrapping aren’t cure-alls. Over time, foam naturally breaks down—especially in high-use areas like the favorite seat on the couch. When the internal structure deteriorates, no amount of steaming will bring back the support and comfort you once had.

In these cases, replacing the foam is the best solution.
