Antique Armchairs – Refinished and Reupholstered in Charlotte Fabrics “Spring Vine”
Project type
Residential Upholstery
Date
October 2025
Location
Lethbridge, Alberta
This restoration was unique because the majority of time wasn’t spent sewing—it was spent sanding. The chairs originally featured a deep red stain that had penetrated so far into the wood that removing it required more than 30 hours of careful sanding. Even after that, the color needed to be evened out with two full treatments of two-part wood bleach.
To sand the turned legs evenly without flattening their contours, we mounted them on a lathe—a meticulous but necessary step to preserve the craftsmanship of the original design. After extensive refinishing, we applied a classic gray stain that beautifully complemented the fabric.
The deck and back were completely rebuilt with new webbing, foam, terylene, and decking for lasting structure and comfort. The client selected Charlotte Fabrics’ “5868 Spring Vine”, a timeless pattern that paired perfectly with the warm-gray wood finish and gave these antique armchairs a sophisticated new life.
